Lesson 65

At times wisdom seems confusing.  It just doesn’t make sense at first.  But when you dig deeper into the words, you find pearls of extraordinary value.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
For through me your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.
If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;
if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.”  (Proverbs 9:10-12 NIV)

When you fear the Lord, you are not trembling every moment of every day.  This kind of fear is a respect or a sense of awe toward Him.  Since He alone can give such wondrous wisdom, only by respecting Him can you be granted that wisdom.  Would you willing give something away so valuable to someone who disrespected you or treated you badly?  Then why should God?  Learn to respect by God by learning more about Him, submitting to Him, and communicating with Him.  Then you will learn the fear or the respect that He deserves and that we should be showing.
And knowledge…..  So everyone should attend a Christian university and get their Master’s of Divinity?  No.  The knowledge that is spoken here is not the kind that you get from going to school.  It might help, but you cannot get an understanding of God and His will if you do not obtain knowledge.  The more you get to know about God the more you begin to understand yourself, others, the world, the will of God.  You cannot understand everything around you, if you refuse to learn about the one who created it.
“For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.”  Does this mean that if you gain wisdom that you will live into your hundreds?  No.  It is saying here that when you begin to gain wisdom, you’ll find that you make smarter decisions which lead to a healthier life and avoidance of dangerous situations.  Foolishness leads to bad decisions and danger.  Only wisdom can pull you from it.
So, it is not a far stretch to say that wisdom is like a guardian angel to you.  Wisdom will guide you onto right paths and show you where you need to go.  It will help you in tricky situations and warn you when danger is near.  It will reward not always with material possessions but with peace and comfort.  But when you reject wisdom, a mocker, you will be alone in your suffering because you did not call on wisdom and heed its warning.
Are you ready to give God the respect that He deserves?  Are you ready to admit that He is the only way?
