Throughout this Proverbs study the fact that wisdom is important keeps being mentioned. Over and over. Why would that be? Well, we have been described as sheep. Sheep aren’t the smartest animals in the barnyard. They have to be constantly watched and reminded. That’s us! We need constant reminding of everything. If you don’t agree, why are there warnings about not using electrical items while in the shower everywhere you turn? We need reminding.
20 My son, keep your father’s commands
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them upon your heart forever;
fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will guide you;
when you sleep, they will watch over you;
when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For these commands are a lamp,
this teaching is a light,
and the corrections of discipline
are the way to life,
24 keeping you from the immoral woman,
from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. (6:20-24 NIV)
When parents are full of God’s wisdom, not taking them to heart is very dangerous. To the child I say listen to your parents’ wisdom. To the parent I say get wisdom! That needs to come before the child should be listening.
Make wisdom (not foolishness) something that is part of you. It should be as natural as the clothes you wear. It should be indiscernible from you. Attach them to your heart and soul and never lose them.
As you go through life, wisdom will guide you when you come to a fork in the road.
When you are confused or unsure of your next step, wisdom will light the path and show you the pitfalls and the solid areas.
When you need correcting and your path adjusted, wisdom will come forth and set you straight.
When you want to know how to live, let wisdom reign.
When you follow wisdom, you can be kept away from sin. You won’t fall for deceitful practices. You won’t fall for lies. You won’t fall for the tricks of the world. You won’t fall for the seduction of the world around you.
You won’t fall. You will stand!
