It’s rather funny the way we try to hide our sins and faults. Most people around us know full well about them. What is even funnier is when we think God doesn’t know anything about them. The All-Knowing Creator doesn’t know about that lie you told? About that “innocent” kiss with your boss’s wife? About taking the extra change the cashier said? About telling all that gossip? Remember that we are talking about God here!
For a man’s ways are in full view of the LORD,
and he examines all his paths.
The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him;
the cords of his sin hold him fast.
He will die for lack of discipline,
led astray by his own great folly. (Proverbs 5:21-23 NIV)
Do you remember as a kid sneaking into the cookie when Mom wasn’t around and then when confronted with crumbs down your shirt, chocolate around your mouth, and all remaining evidence hiding unsuccessfully behind your back? That’s how I feel when God confronts me about an issue that I would like to pretend didn’t happen. But it is impossible.
If I had listened to wisdom and the teachings I had been given over the years even as an adult, I might not be feeling guilty at that moment. In the end it all catches up to us whether we would like to admit it now or not. When you decide to do wrong, you will not escape judgment on it. Notice that I said “decide”. You actually decide to do wrong. You decide to open your mouth and allow that kind of language to leave your lips. You decide to not be honest. You decide to lie. You decide. And you will get caught. Many do not get caught for years so they think that they got away with it. Many do not get caught in this life time, but God is waiting at the other end.
We are so fixated on today and the immediate repercussions that very few of think of or care about tomorrow or the days that follow. All we care about is the here and now. If we think we got away with it, we breathe a sigh of relief and put it out of our minds and go on. But can you really do that? No. The guilt arises in many areas and effects your relationships, your decisions, your sleep patterns. You might think that you’ve buried your head in the sand and all is fine, but the world can see the rest of you and the guilt written there.
These verses are written to get your attention. If they are bringing you down because of something you have done, then it is a good thing. I mean that in the sense that an unresolved issue has been brought to the forefront and can be cleansed. Go to God. Ask Him to help you clear it up. Remember that when we go to Him with all our problems, no matter how “small”, He will take care of them in His way which is the perfect way. It might be painful for the time, but you won’t regret getting your life straight and relying on God.
