Lesson 15

King Solomon says in Proverbs 3:13-15

Blessed is the man who finds wisdom,
the man who gains understanding,

for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold.

She is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.(NIV)

Once again he is stressing how important wisdom is.  If you had all the jewels in the world at your feet and told you could have it all or you could have wisdom.  Which one would you choose?  With the jewels you might become the richest person in the world.  Power would be at your fingertips.  Fame would surround you.  Everyone would know who you are and see the beauty of those jewels.

With wisdom, you have any of those material possessions like you would from the jewels.  People would not take one look at you and know your worth.  You would not have the same power that the jewels give.  Yet, you would be richer than anyone because you understand.  You have more power because you have the wisdom that could prevent disaster.  You have something that others will respect and remember about you for generations.  Rubies cannot do that.

Let’s look at this a little differently and more personal.  Don’t take the rubies, gold, and silver so literal because how many of us actually have these or ever will?  But we have things that can be just as alluring and hypnotizing.  We have all those new, cool gadgets that come out every second.  We would sell our blood or maybe even our soul for them.  Cars.  Houses.  Positions.  Popularity.  These are all powerful and desired by most.  But in the end they are worthless compared to having wisdom.  Wisdom can save your life, protect, guide down the right path, give you a position in the world that is far above what material possessions ca.

What is your gold?  What obsesses you?  How much more do you want the wisdom?  Pray about that today.
