Lesson 12

King Solomon continues his advice in Proverbs 3:5-8 –

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.

This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
(NIV)

Trust.  A word we use a lot, but will admit that we don’t have much of.  Trust means that we have to give up control.  That we rely on someone else.  That is very hard.  We are taught to be self-sufficient, to be in control of our lives, to be a person show if needed.  This goes against everything we are taught.  Society plays a big part in this.  Have the politicians given us reason to trust?  Have the church leaders given us reason to trust?  Have our family members given us reason to trust?  Have we given people reason to trust?  Only the Lord has always stood by His Word and kept His promises.  When we can trust in Him completely and not rely totally on ourselves, can we gain wisdom.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart” – you cannot do it with just simple words.  It has to be sincere and it has to be true.  It has to be complete!

“lean not on your own understanding” – whether you believe it or not, you don’t know everything.  You don’t know how it all works, how it will play out, how it will work out.  Only He does.  So rely on Him.  What do you have to lose but a little pride.

“in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” –  Trust Him and acknowledge Him.  When you do that, the paths through live won’t seem so much like a roller-coaster.  He will show you a straight path.  A path that He’ll walk each and every step of the way.

It is emphasized again by “Do not be wise in your own eyes” that you should acquire some humility.  You might have some answers that you have learned over the years through education and experience, but you still don’t know it all or every will.  When you can “fear” God (respect Him and acknowledge Him) and avoid evil, you can only have a “health to your body”.  You will live and live well.

Today and this week lets focus and trying not to be the one with all the answers and let Him supply those answers.
