Lesson 7

One of the things I love about James is what he has to say on the tongue.  I’ll be honest.  It usually hurts.  But I only know of one or two people who do not need to learn more about how to control their tongue.  James says in 1:26-27

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Now, there are MANY people who consider themselves religious.  It can be defined in various ways.  But no matter what religious means to you, you are deceived if you cannot take hold of your tongue. Your tongue can do more damage and longer lasting damage than a forest fire.  Instead of gossiping and talking about worthless things that do nothing for anyone, why aren’t you giving a blanket to that homeless man, a few canned goods to the woman who just lost a job, volunteer to babysit for a single parent.  Is your faith pure? Is it showing?
