Lesson 26

Are you pretty sure of what you should do in most circumstances?  Are you sure that you’ve studied up enough to make sure that you are doing what you are commanded and doing it in the manner called to do?

My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20  NIV)

We are supposed to bring our brothers and sisters back to fellowship with God.  They are on a very dangerous road and need you to pull them back.  Many of us get that part if we manage to get our heads up out of our toys and own guarded personal time.  But how do you go about doing it?  Do you browbeat them?  Do you rant and rail at them?  Do you nag them?  Do you remind them of the road to hell?  Do you do this 24/7?  Is this how Jesus did it?

We are to bring those back in love.  We are to pray for them, be there for them, empathize with them, and forgive them.  Pointing out the truth is only a small part of this command.  We are called to love them and treat them with mercy and kindness.

How do you treat the backslidden?  Do you even talk to them?  Do you really love them?  Do you hold back on judgment?
