These verses are some that I feel are not looked at enough. Each one of us fall for this probably each and every day.
Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins. (James 4:13-17 NIV)
We make such plans. We know exactly what we are going to do when. We need to know our days exactly. I’m guilty of “boasting of tomorrow”. The intent of these words is not to prevent you from planning the next. They are for you to realize that you have no idea what tomorrow really holds. You might have a great idea right now as it stands, but you have NO idea what is coming up. My daily life is a testimonial to that. We need to be humble enough to submit to those changes in our lives and leave it all in God’s hands. This is hard. I’m not just saying this to you. I’m saying this to me. I get so frustrated when I don’t get done what I need to get done because it seems everything is against how I’ve planned my day. It seems that other people’s days are not thwarted like mine. But I’m in the ministry and it is not my life. I keep forgetting that each and every day I gave back to God and it is His to control. I keep forgetting that I should be humble enough to go with the flow because when you do that you find treasures you never would have otherwise. God’s ways are mysterious and so full of wonder.
Have you planned your day out? Have you got an agenda? That can be fine, but as you write down each item do you say “If it is the Lord’s will, I will do this”? Make this a part of your planning. If you don’t plan your day, maybe begin but always with “If it is the Lord’s will, I will do this”. You’ll see a different side of each day and each event that comes your way. You’ll also be praising God for the things you did not get done.
